Alphonse J. DePorter, Jr.

Newark—Al DePorter, 86, died Monday (June 8, 2015) at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Thursday (June 11th) at St. Michael Church, South Main Street. Newark. Burial will be in East Newark Cemetery.

Memorials, in his name, may be made to St. Michael Church, 401 South Main Street, Newark, New York 14513.

Mr. DePorter was born on July 17. 1928 in Newark, the son of Alphonse and Marie DeWind DePorter. After graduating from Newark High School in 1946, he enlisted in the US Army. During his tour of duty, Al served in the Honor Guard for General MacArthur. In 1950, he was called back to active duty because of the Korean Conflict, this time he served with the Special Services, touring with a singing group entertaining the troops. Al started his golfing career at age 12 where he was the Master Caddy at the Newark Country Club. After the service, Al was the Pro at Monroe Country Club, he then came to Newark Country Club. He returned to school and graduated from Penn State with a Degree in Agronomy in 1962. He oversaw the construction and was the greens-keeper at Clifton Springs Country Club, returned to Newark Country Club as the golf pro and greens-keeper. He then got involved with the construction of Taranwould Golf Club and was their greens-keeper. Al loved to listen to opera and had a passion for chocolate.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Wendy, his children Katie (John) deWit of Dedham, Ma, Joshua DePorter of Greece, Thomas (Kerri) of Gorham, Alphonse III (Rhonda) of Clifton Springs, Michelle (Tim) Peters of St. Petersburg, Fl, Kathy (Jim Brennan) DePorter of Geneva, and Mary (Tim Hammond) DePorter of Phelps; eleven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and his beloved dogs Mia and Bella.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers Ronald and Gene.
