Newark—Beth Gerum, 76, on Saturday (March 29, 2014) at the DeMay Living Center.

Friends may call from 5-8 P.M. on Friday (April 4th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Father Felix Dalimpuo will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM on Saturday (April 5th ) at St. Michael’s Church, South Main Street, Newark.

Ms. Gerum was born on June 3, 1937, in New York City, the daughter of Max and Erna Maria Berta Gerum. She graduated from Albany College of Pharmacy and received a Masters Degree in Special Education from Nazareth College. Beth had been a medical technician and was a special education teacher at the Newark Developmental Center for 20 years. She was very active in the Newark Players working in many capacities from stage hand to actor. Beth was a member of NOW, the National Organization of Women. A delegate to the 1996 Democrat Convention in Chicago and was the first women to run for Village Trustee in Newark. In 1986, she served with the Peace Corp for two years in Ecuador. She then managed the Tremont Nursing Home in Aurora, Colorado and was a financial planner for First Investors in Denver, Colorado retiring in 1995. She had been a volunteer at the Denver Botanical Gardens. Beth returned to Newark in 2005 where she volunteered with the Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County. She was communicant of St. Michael’s Church.

She is survived by three daughters Deborah Ebanks of Newark, Heidi (Donald Patchell) Dobish of Shephardstown WV, Katherine (Christopher) Childs of Newark; seven grandchildren Aliana and Elijah Ebanks, Sarah and Evelyn Lian Childs, Mabel and Max Patchell; two brothers Eugene (Denice) Gerum of Pomfret Center, CT, and Peter Gerum of Littleton, CO, several nieces and nephews. Beth was predeceased a son Max Dobish and grandson Max Childs.
