Stiles, Harold J. Jr.

Newark .. Harold James Stiles, Jr., 96, died Tuesday (April 28, 2015) at the Newark Manor Nursing Home.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at 2 P.M. on Sunday (May 3rd) at the Park Presbyterian Church, Maple Court, Newark with a reception to follow immediately. A private burial service will be held in Newark Cemetery.

Memorials, in Harold's name, may be made to the Harold J. Stiles, Jr. Scholarship Fund at the Newark High School, 100 East Miller Street, Newark, NY 14513.

Harold was born April 9, 1919, on the kitchen table at the family home on East Miller Street, the son of Harold J. and Cora Riesenberger Stiles, Sr. He liked to say that he never wandered far from that kitchen table which was relatilvely true until his heart attack at age 73. With the life style change, he was allowed another 23 years of good living. He graduated from Newark High School in 1936 where he enjoyed band and tennis. Harold received his bachelor degree from the Univerisity of Rochester in 1940 and a law degree from Cornell Univerisity in 1942. Within a week of taking and passing the bar exam, he left for his military career in the Army. Most of his time in the service was spent in Algiers were he was a cryptographer, completing his service as a Staff Sgt.

Returning home in 1945, he started his law career. First in the office John W. Miles in Lyons, moving to the old-fashioned parlor in his parents home in Newark, then sharing an offices with his friend Avery B. Robinson for the next 28 years. Harold was elected Village Justice in 1957, served 16 years then was elected Town Justice in 1973. In 1975, he was elected Wayne County Judge completing a ten year term. During this time, he was Administrative Justice, served over 2 years as Acting N.Y Supreme Court Justice mostly in Rochester but from Buffalo to the end of Long Island. He also served one term in Rochester as Acting Surrogate of Monroe County. Harold was active in the community on the Newark School Board and playing in the Central Park Band. He was also a member of the Masons, Elks, American Legion and VFW.

He is survived by his children Pamela (Paul) of Brighton, John (Candace) of Newark, James (Mary) of Newburyport, MA;, and David Stiles of Newark; three grandchildren Luke (Orla) Stiles, Jared (Austen) Tankel and Anson Stiles; his sister Mary Morrison of Newark and many other family members and friends. Harold was predeceased by his wife of 20 years and mother of his four children, Esther VanNorman, who died in 1969. In 1971, he married Mary Lou Buck, who predeceased him in 2000.
