Newark"Bernard G. O'Connell, 84, died Tuesday (Feb 7, 2006) at his home on Peirson Avenue.
Friends may call on Thursday (Feb. 9, 2006) from 4-8 PM at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Funeral services will be at 11 AM on Friday (Feb. 10th) at the funeral home. Burial services will follow in the Newark Cemetery.

Mr. O'Connell was born on January 21, 1922, in Newark the son of George and Bertha Schmidt O'Connell. He was a graduate of Newark High School Class of 1939. During World War II, he served in China, Burma and India with the Army. Bernard worked for 42 years, at Garlock, Inc. in Palmyra where he was a supervisor of production, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society where he had served on the board of directors.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Geraldine, two daughters Patricia (William) Fyles of Marion, Nancy (William) Altenburg of Syracuse, two sons James (Barbara) of Newark, Michael (Kerry) of Jamesport, Long Island, eight grandchildren Jessica Fyles of Ashton, Va., Adam Fyles of Rochester, Kathryn Altenburg of Monmouth Junction, NJ, Ryan and Daniel O'Connell of Newark, Colleen, Brian, Margaret O'Connell of Jamesport, NY; two sisters Thelma (Goodwin) Sheridan of Brandon, Miss. and Marilyn (Donald) Ruch of Jamestown, Ca.
