Newark—Betty Jane Palermo, 86, died Wednesday (October 26, 2016) at the DeMay Living Center.

 

Friends may call from 4-7 PM on Tuesday (November 1st) at Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Wednesday (November 2nd) at St. Michael Church, South Main Street, Newark. Burial will follow at Newark Cemetery.

 

Memorials, in her name, may be made to either, the DeMay Living Center, Activities Fund, 100 Sunset Drive, Newark, New York 14513 or the Wayne County Humane Society, 1475 County House Road, Lyons, New York 14489.

 

Betty was born on August 28, 1930, in Clifton Springs, the daughter of the late Harry and Leona Dickerson Clapton. She was a graduate of Clifton Springs High School and while in school worked at the Clifton Springs Sanatorium. After high school, she worked at Loblaw's where she met her husband Frank. She retired from the Newark Manor Nursing Home where she had worked as a geriatrics technician for 35 years. A communicant of St. Michael Church, Betty enjoyed being outside in the sun, gardening, bingo, music, traveling with her husband and had a love for animals. She especially enjoyed being with her family.

 

She is survived by her daughter Judi (Gary) Shumway of Lyons; three sons Gene (Marcia) of Newark, Jeffrey (Shawn) of Newark and Robert (Wendy) of Clifton Springs; twelve grandchildren, ten great grandchildren; sister-in-laws Eleanor Palermo, Rose (Gary) LaLonde; brother-in-laws Paul and Cosmo Palermo; several nieces and nephews. Betty was predeceased by her husband Frank on November 1, 2013; her sisters Esther Atkinson, Dorothy Call, Marie Fox; brothers Emerson Garling, William and David, Kesel, Robert Clapton.

 

Special thanks from her family, to all of Betty's caregivers at her home and the DeMay Living Center for their compassion and loving care, they became like family to her.
