Newark"David W. Smith, died Sunday (May 24, 2009) at age 76, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Fulfilling David's wishes, all funeral services will be private and at the convenience of his family at the South Lyons Cemetery with full military honor. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the House of John, 14 Spring St., Clifton Springs, NY 14432 or the Park Presbyterian Church, Maple Court, Newark, NY 14513.

He was born in Lyons, the son of the late Claude J. and Gertrude Berns Smith. He grew up in Attica, New York, graduated Attica High School and enlisted in the Navy Air Force. He was proud to have served on the aircraft carriers Essex and Yorktown during the Korean War. He was later declared a disabled veteran due to injuries he suffered while on duty. He returned home and graduated from Alfred State College where he met and married his college sweetheart Cynthia Ames of Syracuse on June 6, 1959.

David started his career with H.L. Baughman Construction Co. working on the original highway project "Can of Worms" in Rochester. He later became Assistant Village Engineer for Newark and then retired from the Newark Central School District where he served for over twenty years as Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds retiring July 31, 1987.

He was a member of the Park Presbyterian Church, the Newark Masonic Lodge, where he served as master on two separate occasions. He was a member of the Arcadia Memorial Post, VFW. Smith was an avid gardener and was known for his unique moss back yard. He also enjoyed cards, sports, and traveling extensively with his wife both at home and abroad.

Besides his loving wife Cynthia, he is also survived by his beloved children, Loren J Irish of Fairport, son and daughter-in-law Zachary D. and Deborah Butticcio Smith of Lyons; granddaughters Mackenzie Irish, Alexis Smith, step grandson and granddaughter-in-law Michael and Rebecca Irish of Huntersville, NC, step grandsons Justin and Devin Tylenda, sister Phyllis E. Sliger of Rodeo, Calif. ;several nieces and nephews
