Elmer W. Chappell
Newark"Elmer W. Chappell, 93, of East Maple Avenue, died Saturday (July 23, 2005) at his home.
Friends may call from 3-6 PM on Friday (July 29th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Funeral services will follow at 6 PM with the Rev. John Watkins officiating. Burial will be in the Newark Cemetery.
Memorials in his name may be made to the Park Presbyterian Church, Maple Court, Newark, New York 14513.
Mr. Chappell was born in Lyons on August 21, 1911, the son of Daniel and Agnes Johnson Chappell. He was Chief Petty Officer on several transport ships in the US Navy from 1928 to his retirement in 1953. He served during World War II off the coast of Africa and England and was part of the Normandy landing force. During the Korean Conflict he served in the Pacific. Elmer was a member of the Arcadia Memorial Post #2886, VFW and the Newark Elks Lodge #1249.
He is survived by his sons Robert (Betty) of Lyons and Thomas (Barbara) of Newark and a daughter Susan Jean (David) Walters of Walworth, five grandchildren Kevin, Andrew and Robin Chappell, Karen Van Liew, Jennifer Smith, and Geoffrey Walters, 5 great great grandchildren. Elmer was predeceased by his wife Winifred in 1995, great grandson Derrick in 2003, and three sisters Dorothy Hunt, Freda Cunningham, and Mildred Kotvis.
