Newark- Frank J. Palermo, 86, died on Friday (November 1, 2013) at the Geneva Living Center North.
Friends may call from 4 - 8 P.M. on Tuesday (November 5th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M. on Wednesday (November 6th ) at St. Michael Church, South Main Street, Newark. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery with military honors.
Memorials, in his name, may be made to St. Michael's Church, 401 South Main Street, Newark, New York 14513.
Mr. Palermo was born on August 27, 1927, in Newark the son of the late Anthony and Marion Tavano Palermo. After graduating from Newark High School in 1945, he served with the US Navy in the Pacific Fleet. Frank started his career in the grocery business as a bag-boy at the Market Basket. He worked his way up and became assistant manager and manager of Loblaw's for thirty years. The next eighteen years, Frank owned and operated Palermo's Big M on West Miller Street in Newark, retiring in 1993. He was a communicant of St. Michael Church, a member of the Newark Elks, August Mauer Post 285 American Legion and the Arcadia Memorial Post 2883. Frank was an avid golfer, bowler, enjoyed playing cards with his friends and taking his walks in Perkins Park.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty, a daughter Judi (Gary) Shumway of Lyons; three sons Gene (Marcia) and Jeffrey (Shawn) of Newark and Robert (Wendy) of Clifton Springs; twelve grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; brothers Paul and Cosmo (Phyllis) of Newark; a sister Rose Marie (Gary) Lalonde of Auburn; two sister-in-laws Eleanor and Iona Palermo; many nieces and nephews. Frank was predeceased by a granddaughter Emily Palermo and a great granddaughter; three brothers Anthony, Rocco and John; two sisters Josephine Craver and Catherine Palermo; two sister-in-laws Nancy and Jane and brother-in-law Harland Craver.
