Frederick W. Burgess, Jr.
Newark—Frederick W. Burgess, Jr., formerly of Newark, died peacefully on Saturday, (October 31, 2009) in Kissimmee, Florida, at the age of 78, after a courageous battle with cancer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 A.M. on Saturday (November 7th) at St. Michael’s Church, South Main Street, Newark. The family will greet friends in the church hall after the Mass. Burial will be in Newark, Cemetery.
Memorials in his name may be made to St. Michael's Church.
Frederick was born October 21, 1931 in Lyons, New York, the son of Frederick W. and Edna Baker Burgess. He was a life-long resident and businessman in Newark. He started the first Tastee Freeze in Newark in 1954 and was owner of several other businesses in the Newark Area including Freddie’s Drive In, DeVries Gardens, Freddie’s Insta Wash and the Street of Shops. Fred was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church in Newark. In his spare time, he enjoyed collecting and restoring antique clocks and watches and traveling around the world with his wife and close friends. He was also a member of several antique watch associations and was past president of the NAWCC Chapter 13.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Ann Marie (DeVries) Burgess, nine sons Steven, Terence (Roxanne), Matthew (Wendy), Christopher (Shelia) and Frederick III (Shelly) all of Newark, Jeffrey (Betsy) of Chesapeake, VA, Jay (Essie) of Sugar Land, TX , Joseph (Karen) of Henderson, NV and Thomas (Julie) of Phelps and one daughter Julie (Tony) Celestino of Kissimmee, FL.; 27 grandchildren, 15 great-Grandchildren, a sister-in-law Betty Norcott Griffith of Florida, several nieces and nephews. Frederick was predeceased by his parents, a brother Timothy Burgess of Rochester and his brother-in-law and partner in business, Frederick J. DeVries of Newark.
