George E. Gates

Newark---George E. Gates. 92, died Sunday (November 9, 2014) at the DeMay Living Center. Friends may call Saturday (November 15^th) from 11 AM to 1 PM at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark where a funeral service will follow at 1 PM with Rev. Steven Matteson officiating. Burial will be in East Palmyra Cemetery.

Memorials, in his name, may be made to the Wayne County Humane Society, 1475 County House Road, Lyons, New York 14489.

Mr. Gates was born on August 5, 1922 in Clifton Springs, the son of the late George S. and Isabelle Durham Gates. He graduated from Manchester High School in 1940 and then worked on the Herman Farm in Palmyra. In 1946, George started his career as an appliance repairman with the Herman Appliance Store in Palmyra, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newark. For several years in his retirement, George was a grounds keeper for the East Palmyra Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Myrtle, three children Sharil (Gregory) Sellinger of Crestview, Fl., Eric (Kathryn) Gates of Sierrra Vista, AZ. and Neil (Joan) Gates of Palmyra; three grandchildren Gary McMillin, Matthew and Nicole Gates and a great granddaughter Sabrina McMillin; several nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his brothers William and Donald, sisters Alice Cole and Hazel Taylor.
