Newark—Harold J. VandeMortel, 93, died Friday (October 16, 2015) at the Canandaigua Veteran Hospital.
Friends may call from 4-7 PM on Monday (October 19th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at
10 AM on Tuesday (October 20th) at St. Michael Church, South Main Street, Newark. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery.
Memorials, in his name, may be made to Wayne County Meals on Wheels, 1519 Nye Road, Lyons, New York 14489.
Harold was born in Newark on October 19, 1921, the son of the late Cornelius and Stephanie Van Waes VandeMortel. He was a communicant of St. Michael Church. He was a graduate of Newark High School in the Class of 1939. During World War II, Harold served with the US Navy, aboard an aircraft carrier in the South Altantic. He was a life member of the August Mauer Post American Legion, was a member of the Arcadia Senior Citizens and the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society. Harold was a life long, avid golfer and had won multiple championship at the Newark Country Club.
He is survived by his children Rita VandeMortel of Newark, Steven (Ann) VandeMortel of Newark and Elaine (James Owens) VandeMortel of Sodus; four grandchildren Sarah (Bob) Fisher, Nikki (Charles) Cuneo, Elizabeth Switzer, John (Meredith) Switzer; four great grandchildren Tyler, Amanda, Mackenzi and Kaylee; his brother Eugene of Sodus Point. Harold was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Pauline in 2008.
