Downey, Herbert L.
Newark " Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at age 93. Herbie was born June 9, 1915 in Holley, New York, son of Simon and Louise Downey, the youngest of 11 children.
Herbie was the neighborhood Grampa to all the children on the block. He loved to putter and spend time in his workshop and was known for repairing anything that was broken; there was nothing he couldn't fix with duct tape and spare parts. He was a lifelong Yankee's fan and spent much of his time visiting with friends and his numerous grandchildren in his Yankee Clubhouse, built of scrap lumber and cast-off building material. He also enjoyed gardening, watching western movies and listening to his music. He was an unbeatable champion checker player. Above all he loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him beyond words.
Herbie was predeceased by Anne, his wife of 65 years, his siblings, his sons Randall and Sheldon and a grandson Eric Downey. He is survived by his daughters Sharon (James) Prinzi of Newark, Linda (Bruce) VanEtten of Manchester, Beverly (Lawrence) Whelpton of Pennellville, NY and daughter-in-law Janice (Randall) Downey of Colorado, 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and a great-great grandson.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, March 14th at 3 PM at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark, NY. Donations in his name may be made to Newark-Wayne Community Hospital Palliative Care.
