Newark" Herbert Ray Smith, 76, died Monday (February 18, 2008) at Rochester General Hospital.

Friends may call on Wednesday (February 20th) from 6 " 8 PM at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Funeral services will be 11AM on Thursday (February 21st) at the funeral home with Carlos Smith, officiating. Burial will be in East Newark Cemetery.

Mr. Smith was born on April 12 1931 in Roxobel, North Carolina, the son of Charles and Zeila Upton Smith. Herbert was a land surveyor for over 38 years with the Harnish & Lookup and then the MRB Group. Herbert served with the US Air Force during the Korean War and was a member of the August Mauer Post #285, American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Shirley Gary Smith, a son Steven Smith of Orlando FL, a daughter Kathryn (John) Ryckbost of Newark, five grandchildren Christopher, Jason, Lisa, Julie, and Jeffrey. Herb was predeceased by his son Joseph in 1979, one sister and several brothers.
