Herland Bouwens
Newark—Herland “Herly” W. Bouwens, Sr. ,74, died Friday (September 4, 2009) at his home on Ford Rd., after a year-long battle with Myelofibrosis.
Family and friends may call from 3:30-6:30 P.M. on Tuesday (September 8th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. There will be an Elks visitation at 6:30pm. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Herly was born May 3, 1935 in Newark, the son of Oliver and Clara VanDevelder Bouwens. He was a graduate of Newark High School, Class of 1953. He worked at Commercial Enterprises in Newark as a Lithographer/Photographer and retired from Bausch and Lomb in Rochester in 1996 after 35 years as an industrial photographer. He served eight years in the National Guard. Herly was a life member of the Newark Elks Lodge and was the Elk of the Year for 2009. Mr. Bouwens was a 44 year member of the First United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years Esther (DeCann), daughters Lori (Joe Dickinson) Weimer of Newark, Julie Robinson of Liverpool, Amy (Craig) Colf of Palmyra, a son Herland Jr. “Butch” (Christine) Bouwens of Middlesex, grandchildren Dan and Melissa Weimer, Bridget and Nick Robinson, Herland III, Clayton (Jessica), Ben, and Henry Bouwens, Jayden and Brent Colf, great grandchildren Trevor, Brooke and Christina Bouwens, Douglas Carlson, a sister Joanna (Gary VanHanahan) Fremouw of Newark, sister-in-law Dorothy Bouwens of East Palmyra, sister-in-law Jean (Wally) Avery of Newark, many nieces, nephews, good friends and neighbors. Herly was predeceased by his parents and his brother, Ken.
