Newark—Iona Palermo, 85, died Tuesday (January 6, 2015) at the Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, TN.

Friends may call from 5-8 P.M. on Thursday January 15^th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark, New York. Funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on Friday (January 16^th) at the funeral home. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery.

Mrs. Palermo was born on January 23, 1929 in North Rose, the daughter of the late Charles and Irene Smith Spencer. She was a member of St. Michael Church in Newark and had retired from JC Penneys in Newark. Twelve years ago, she moved Cordova, Tennessee to make her home with her daughter Cheryl.

She is survived by her children, David (Susan) of Altanta, Ga, Mary Ann (Steven) Ashdown of Torrance, Ca, James (Jeanette) of Rochester and Cheryl (Michael) Stemmer of Cordova, Tn.; grandchildren Shane, Jamie, Brandon and Bryant Palermo, Michael and Daniel Connell, Sara and Samantha Stemmer; great grandchildren Taylor Palermo and Reagan Walker; sisters Priscilla (Alan) Hillegas of Chicago, Il, Pauline (Dick) Wonder of Lyons, Rosalie Palmateer of Lyons and Sylvia (Dick) Austin of Williamson; sister-in-laws Eleanor, Betty, Phyllis Palermo, Rose Marie LaLonde, brother-in-laws Paul, Cosmo Palermo and Gary LaLonde; many nieces and nephews. Iona was predeceased by her husband of 49 years Rocco, son Randy, sisters Shirley Austin and Dorothy Burt, sisters and brother-in-laws Josephine Craver, Catherine, Jane, Nancy, Anthony, John and Frank Palermo.
