James R. DeWitt, Jr.
Newark----James R. DeWitt, Jr., 58, passed away on Thursday (June 12, 2014) at Strong Memorial Hospital, after a long battle with cancer.
Friends may call from 4 - 8 P.M. on Sunday (June 15th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday (June 16th) at St. Michael Church, South Main Street, Newark. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Phelps.
Memorials, in his name, may be made to American Cancer Society, 1120 South Goodman Street, Rochester, New York 14620 or to Lollypop Farm, 99 Victor Road, Fairport, New York 14450.
Mr. De Witt was born on April 24, 1956 in Jersey City, New Jersey the son of the late James R. and Marilyn Sweeney DeWitt, Sr. He grew up in Hopewell Junction, New York and graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes in Poughkeepsie in 1974. Graduating from the New York State University at Geneseo in 1978, he continued his education earning his Masters Degree at Ohio State. He was a communicant of St. Michael Church. For 31 years, he was a school psychologist with the Newark School District, retiring in 2012. Jim was a long time swim coach for Newark High School and for various area swim clubs. For over 20 years, he also had a private counseling practice.
Jim is survived by his wife of 28 years, Nancy (Buck); his children James III, of Rochester and Meghan of Manhattan; eight siblings Mary Ellen (Raymond) LaRose of Hopewell Junction, Noreen (Daniel) Potterton of Englishtown, NJ, Kate (Kevin) Fitzgerald of Newtown, CT, Nancy (John) Donahoeof Concord, Ma, Elizabeth (John) Rotunno of Maplewood, NJ, Robert (Elisa) DeWitt of Fishkill, Theresa (James) Turner of New Providence, NJ, Monica (Vincent) Frese of Cumming, Ga; many nieces and nephews.
