John F. Wood, Sr.

Lyons/Port Gibson—John F. Wood, 85, of Lyons, formerly of Port Gibson, died Friday (February 24, 2017) at Highland Hospital.

A funeral service will be held at 11 AM on Tuesday (February 28, 2017) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Burial will be in Port Gibson Cemetery.

Memorials, in his name, may be made to either the Sodus Center Fire Department or the Port Gibson Fire Department.

John was born in Sterling, New York on June 22, 1931, the son of Harold Morris and Bessie Sampson Wood. He served his country during the Korean Conflict. John was a machinist at Garlock, Inc. and worked a second job as a doll-up man at VanBortel Motors in Palmyra. He was a member of the Port Gibson United Methodist Church. John had been a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He loved spending time with his family.

He is survived by his companion Aileen Wood of Lyons, two sons John Jr. (Dawn) of Port Gibson and James (Cheryl) of Wayland; five gramdchildren Melissa Veeck, Jeremy, James, Jeffrey and Jenna Wood; three great grandchildren, Zander, Sebastian and Jaxon; four siblings, Bessie Monachina of Sodus, Dorothy Simmons of Lyons, Fred (Linda) Wood of Lyons and Gloria Wood; several nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his wife Barbara in 2006, a son David in 1991 and three grandchildren.
