Newark"John Manwaring Davis, 77, of Pardee Smith Road, died Saturday (Jan.28, 2006) at the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital.
Friends may call on Tuesday (Jan. 31st) from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Funeral services will be on Wednesday (Feb. 1st) at 11 AM at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, South Main Street, Newark. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery.

A native of Newark, Dr. Davis was born April 26, 1928, the son of Dr. James L. and Dorothy Manwaring Davis. After a graduating from Hamilton College, he received his doctor of medicine from New York Medical College. He interned at Syracuse Upstate Medical Center in 1956 and was called to active military duty in the US Army in 1957. He served with the 14th Field Hospital, Eighth Infantry Division in Germany. After his discharge, he finished his residency in 1961 in internal medicine. Dr. Davis returned to Newark, entering medical practice and was a partner in the Newark Medical Center. After the center closed, he continued in private practice until his retirement in 2004. At Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, Dr. John served as Chief of Medical Services 1963-1967. He established the Coronary and Intensive Care Unit in 1966, served as Utilization and Peer Review Committee chairman 1965-1973, served as chief of staff from 1976-1981 and was medical director from 1997 until his retirement in 2005.
Dr. Davis was past president of the Wayne County Medical Society and a member of the American Medical Association. His leadership in two particular organizations, the American Lung Association and the American Heart Association had high impact locally and state-wide. He was a past president of both the Finger Lakes Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Assoc. from 1968-1986 and the New York State Tuberculosis Association 1977-1981. Dr. Davis was on the board of the American Lung Association, Finger Lakes Heart Association where he was President from 1983-86 and on the Heart Association State Board from 1983-87.
Dr. Davis also focused on the advancement of ambulance care with his efforts with the Wayne County Mobile Coronary Ambulance Committee. He was chairman of Empire Nine Regional Emergence Medical Services Program from 1975-1979, state faculty for cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and advanced cardiac life support, delegate to NYS Affiliate and the American Heart Association.
Dr. John was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church. Member of the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society and the Sodus Bay Historical Society. He was also long-time secretary-treasurer of the 1249 Club, and had been a member of the Newark Country Club. He was a collector of antiques and had been an antique dealer with his wife, Martha. John loved the outdoors, the birds, wildlife and especially working around his pond and property.
He is survived by two sons Christopher of Newark, Craig (Jennifer Bach) of Parker, CO and a daughter Jane (Louis) Perlaky of Boise, ID, four grandchildren Louis and Emma Jane Perlaky, Griffin and Skye Bach-Davis; three brothers James (Shirley) of Eureka, Ca, David (Fran) of Alamo, Ca. and Robert (Joanne) of Spring Hill, KA and a special friend Rena Reed of Lyons.
Dr. John was predeceased by his parents, wives Marjorie and Martha.
