John V. Bailey
Newark– John V. Bailey, 80, passed away Tuesday (September 10, 2013) at Rochester General Hospital.
Friends may call from 4- 8 P.M on Thursday (Sept. 12th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 E. Miller St., Newark, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Felix Dalimpuo at noon on Friday (Sept13th) at St. Michael Church, South. Main Street, Newark. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery.
Memorials, in his name, may be made to St. Michael's Church.
Mr. Bailey was born April 10, 1931 in Newark, the son of Frank and Magdalena Mancuso Bailey. He was a graduate of Newark High School in 1948, and was the manager for many of the school's sports teams and was the Section 5 table-tennis champion. Also while in his youth, John was a Boy Scout earning the rank of Eagle and was the recipient of the Ad Atari DEO award. John was a life long communicant of St. Michael Church and was the First Chairperson of the St. Michael Parish Council. At one time, he owned a car wash in Wolcott and for over 35 years owned and operated the West End Collision Shop on West Union Street in Newark. He had been the President of the Greater Rochester Auto Body Guild. In his retirement, John worked at the Wayne Fitness Center, the Newark Golf Clubs, and Concord Ford. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the August Mauer Post American Legion and the Arcadia Memorial Post VFW. He also belonged to the Newark Elks Club and the Newark Council of Knights of Columbus. John loved to play golf and was a charter member of the Clifton Springs Country Club. He was an active member of the Newark High School Football Boosters and a member of the chain gang for over twenty years. He supported many of Newark's youth sporting programs. John was a devoted Cleveland Browns and Notre Dame football fan.
John is survived by five sons Michael (Sharon) of Detroit, John E. (Sandra) of Pineville, NC, Daniel (Rebecca) of East Aurora, Thomas (Betsy) Cannon-Bailey of Walworth , Joseph (Renee) of Newark; daughter-in-law Sandra Conover of Fairport; sixteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three sisters Irene Cimineri of Clyde, Carmella (Joe) Prichi of Geneva,, Anna (Carl) Chandler of Newark, several nieces and nephews and special friend Lois Weiman of Newark. Predeceased by his wife of 45 years Margaret in 2002, two infant sons and siblings Lucy Lester, Mary DeLork, Tony and Albert Bailey.
