Newark--- John V. Palermo, 83, died on Saturday (April 28, 2012) at his home.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM on Monday (April 30th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM on Tuesday (May 1st) at St. Michael’s Church, South Main Street, Newark. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery with full military honors.

Mr. Palermo was born in Newark on December 31, 1928, the son of the late Antonio and Marion Tavano Palermo. A resident of Newark all his life, he graduated from Newark High School in the Class of 1947. While in high school, he received awards in baseball, football, basketball, track and volleyball. John worked at Red Jacket Telephone Company for a few years and then as service administer for Ontario Telephone, retiring in 1994. He was a communicant of St. Michael’s Church. John served in the US Army during the Korean War and was a member of the August Mauer Post #285, American Legion where he was the financial officer for 40 years. For 35 years, John was the secretary of the bowling league at the Newark Country Club. He also served as a Village of Newark Trustee from 1995 till 2003. An avid golfer and bowler, he also enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge.
A loving family man, John is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eleanor; children Patricia ”Patti” (Gary) Hubright of Newark , John V. Jr. of Newark, and Jeanne Button of Sturbridge, MA; four grandchildren Jamie (Shawn) McMullen, Matthew, Patrick, and Morgan Button; four great grandchildren Blake, Peyton, Melanie and Scott; his brothers Paul, Frank (Betty),Cosmo (Phyllis) of Newark and sister Rose Marie (Gary) LaLonde of Auburn; his mother-in-law Daisy O’Brien; sister-in-laws Iona Palermo and Mary Jane (Richard) Molisani; many nieces and nephews and many good friends. He was predeceased by his siblings Anthony, Rocco, Catherine Palermo and Josephine “Babe” Craver; sister-in-laws Jane Palermo, Nancy Palermo and Shirley O’Brien.
