John A. Verkey
Newark"John A. Verkey, 83, of Grace Avenue, died on Tuesday (December 25, 2007) at the DeMay Living Center.
Funeral services will be at 11 AM on Saturday (Dec. 29th) at St. John's Lutheran Church, 50 Spencer Street, Lyons. Burial will be in East Newark Cemetery.

Mr. Verkey was born on January 15, 1924 in Groedee, Holland, the son of John W. and Fanny Zonneville Verkey. He retired in 1979, from the Newark Development Center where he worked in the maintenance department. John was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lyons. During World War II, John was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart with a Oakleaf Cluster while serving with the 36 Division of US Army in Italy and Southern France. He was a life member of the Newark Elks Lodge, Arcadia Memorial Post #2883 VFW and the Disabled American Veterans. John had been an avid bowler. He also loved golfing and fishing.
He is survived by his wife Rose, son Jon Charles (Christine) Verkey of Newark, a stepson Ron (Debbie) Krueger of Newark, seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a brother Abraham Verkey of Tyre, a sister Elizbeth Burcroff of Marion. He also had four half brothers and two half sisters. John was predeceased by his first wife, Maybelle, in 1984.
