L. Virginia Hughes
Newark — Virginia Hughes, 94, died Friday (June 14m 2013) at the Wayne County Nursing Home.
Friends and family are invited to attend a funeral service at 11 A.M. on Thursday (June 20th) at the First United Methodist Church. 301 South Main Street. Newark with the Rev. Roger Smith officiating.
Memorials, in her name, may be made the the First United Methodist Church Organ Fund, 301 South Main Street, Newark, New York 14513.
Mrs. Hughes was born October 8, 1918, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Lloyd and Lura Young Peddicord. She graduated high school in Green Springs, Ohio where she grew-up and from business school in Tiffin, Ohio. During World War II, she served as a Home Guard in her hometown. Virginia work for twenty years in the payroll department of Union Carbite Corp. in Fremont, Ohio before moving to Newark in 1959. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, sang in their choir and was a soloist. For several years, she worked in the church office as the secretary and treasurer Virginia enjoyed traveling around the country with her husband, as he painted nose art on vintage World War II airplanes. She became quite a fan of the planes and often caught rides while Owen was painting.
Virginia is survived by her husband of 71 years, Owen; a daughter Sue (Rev. Perry) Scruggs of Chattanooga, TN; two grandchildren Gina Sweigart and Tomas Camblor; four great grandchildren Matthew and Jessica Sweigart and Shelby and Jackson Camblor; a brother Bob Peddicord of Tiffin, Ohio. She was predeceased by her parents and a brother Lloyd Peddicord.
