Lilene Evonne Berdy
Newark—Lilene Evonne Berdy, 81, died Sunday (July 31, 2016) at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Friends may call from 5-8 P.M. on Friday (August 5th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. A funeral service will be at 11 A.M. on Saturday (August 6th) at the First Baptist Church, 133 East Miller Street, Newark with Pastor Steven Matteson officiating.
Lilene was born on April 12, 1935, in Pittsburgh, Pa, the daughter of the late Louis C and Eve Ludy Lewis. She graduated from Carnegie High School and earned her BS in Education from the University of Pittsburgh. While completing graduate courses at Edinboro University, she met her husband. Lilene taught at Mount Lebanon, Pa. before she started at the Pal-Mac Elementary School teaching fourth and fifth grades. She left teaching for a few years, in 1968, to have children. Lilene returned to work at the Newark Junior High School where she was a substitute teacher and a teachers aide. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church where she directed the cherub choir, taught Sunday school, led the Baptist Youth Fellowship and sang in the choir. Lilene also partnered with her husband at Berdy's Treasure Chest in Palmyra.
She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, J. Stephen of Newark; a son Lewis Stephen (Candie) of Farmington and daughter Lanalee (Jeff) Buziak of Fredericksburg, VA; three grandchildren Miranda and Aidan Berdy and Joshua Buziak; a brother William Lewis of Birmingham, AL; a sister Linda (Jay) McIntyre of Export, PA; brother-in-law James (Deidre) Berdy of Sevierville, TN.; several nieces and nephews.
Lilene was predeceased by her parents and a brother Louis “Buddy” Lewis.
