Muriel Gorall
Newark/Red Creek----84, died on Monday (August 11, 2014) at the Wayne County Nursing Home.
Friends may call from 2-4 & 7-9 PM on Wednesday (August 13th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Funeral services will be at the funeral home at 11 AM on Thursday (August 14th). Burial will be in East Palmyra Cemetery.
Memorials, in her name, may be made to Newark-Arcadia Historical Society, 120 High St, Newark, NY 14513.
Mrs. Gorall was born on March 23, 1930, in Oswegatchie, New York, the daughter of T. Edgar and L. Olive Brown Simzer. She was graduate of John Marshall High in Rochester. She was a long time resident of Newark, where Muriel raised her family, drove school bus for the Newark School District for fifteen years and was a secretary for four years at the Notre Dame Retreat House in Canandaigua before retiring in 1993. She was one of the co-founders of the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society in 1992. She had served as both Vice President and President, Muriel spent many hours volunteering with the organization. She was a member of St. Michael's Church and the Newark Garden Club.
Along with her late husband, Robert she has worked on several Native American historical digs. Muriel was one of the organizers of the 1794 Canandaigua Treaty Commemoration Committee. She served as the secretary for several years of the New York State Archaeological Association. Muriel was a member of the Lewis Henry Morgan Chapter (NYSAA) as well as the William Beauchamp and Thousand Islands Chapters. She also assisted her husband, the Associate Editor, with the publication of the “Iroquoian” and the “NYSAA Bulletin and Journal” for ten years.
Muriel is survived by daughters Christina (Roger) Champion of Red Creek, Julia (David) Young of Newark, sons Jeffrey (Kim) Gorall of Mesa, AZ, Thomas (Joretta) Gorall of Clyde and David (Jana) Mitchell of Peyton, CO; eleven granddaughters, two grandsons; 26 great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and good friends. She is predeceased by her husband Robert in 2011, a daughter Charlotte Gorall, two sons Patrick Gorall and Stephen Mitchell, siblings Evelyn Mayville, Stanley and Mildred Simzer.
