Newark—Myrtle Carol Gates, 92, peacefully went home with her Lord & Savior on Wednesday, March 13, 2024. She was devoted, loving wife to George for over 64 years. He Predeceased her in 2014, also at the age of 92.

Friends may call from 11 AM- Noon on Friday, May 24, 2024, at Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 E. Miller St. in Newark. A funeral service will follow at Noon at the funeral home. Burial will be in East Palmyra Cemetery.

 Mrs. Gates was born December 1, 1931, in Penfield, NY to the late Carl and Elinor Hipp Koester. She graduated from Newark High School in 1950, married shortly after and spent her entire live as a homemaker and being a devoted mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great grandmother and friend to many.

Myrtle’s interests included being an avid reader, enjoyed baking and her hands were always busy knitting or crocheting something all the way until her final months. Over the years, she was a Girl Scout leader, volunteered at her local hospital, and was very active in her church’s woman’s activities. She was an avid Johnny Cash Fan, owned every record he ever made and saw him in concert a few times. 

 She is survived by three children Shari (Gregory) Sellinger of Crestview, FL, Eric (Kathryn) Gates of Sierra Vista, AZ, Neil (Joan) Gates of Macedon; three grandchildren Gary (Barbara) McMillin of Williamsville, NY, Nicole (Naoto) Matoi of Tokyo, Japan, Matthew Gates of Sierra Vista, three great grandchildren Sabrina (Brian) Cartan of Brooklyn, NY, Jean and Ray Matoi of Tokyo; a sister Ruth Wells of Fontatna, CA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

She was predeceased by her husband George; sisters Norma Turner, Olive Zacharek, and Marilyn Koester; a brother Raymond Koester.
