Nancy B. Murphy

Newark – Nancy B. Murphy, 73, died after a short, unexpected illness on Thursday (July 5, 2012) at Rochester General Hospital with her family by her side.

Nancy was born January 10, 1939 in Youngstown, Ohio to Freeman Emery and Catherine Morgan Bangs. The family moved to Lewiston, New York, when Nancy was two years old. She graduated from Lewiston-Porter High School in 1956, attended Niagara University for two years and graduated from the State University of New York at Brockport in 1960. She first taught elementary school in Lewiston, then moved with her husband Paul to Delmar and Attica, where she taught kindergarten for five years. Nancy loved to teach and particularly loved helping children to learn to read. In 1968 they moved to Newark, where she substitute-taught at Perkins, Lincoln, Roosevelt and Kelley schools, then taught full-time at Perkins for nine years. Former students would frequently stop her to remind her that she had had them in school. Nancy helped Paul, and later their sons, in many roles in the funeral home.

After retiring in 1996, Nancy volunteered at the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital, contributing over 3000 hours of service transporting patients. An avid reader, she was on the board of the Friends of the Newark Public Library and helped with the book review luncheons. She volunteered in several roles at the Newark Food Closet. Nancy played in several bridge clubs and loved to organize luncheons with some of her many friends.

Nancy was a communicant of Saint Michael’s Church, where she had served as a Eucharistic Minister, and for years organized the Sunday coffee hours, and often helped at the rummage sale.

Nancy is survived by her husband of 51 years, Paul L.; four children Mary Lynne (Phil) Murphy-Viner of Brighton England, David P. (Tracy) of Newark, John F. (Tere) of Newark, William (Michelle) of Canandaigua; five grandchildren Madeline, Chip, Andrew, Ian, and Arden; three step-grandchildren Zane Smith, Ciera and Ramsey Yost; her sister Dorothy (James) Boyce of Youngstown, NY; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and one daughter, Cindy Lynne.

Friends are invited to call from 4–8 p.m. on Sunday (July 8th) and Monday (July 9th) at the Paul L. Murphy and Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Father Felix Dalimpuo will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Tuesday (July 10th) at Saint Michael’s Church, 401 South Main Street, Newark. Burial will follow at Newark Cemetery.
