Mr. May was born December 4, 1930, in Batavia, New York, the son of Russell and Alverta Lauer May. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mathematics from the State University of New York at Albany before entering the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Stan taught high school mathematics in Spencerport and Bloomfield. He then taught at Newark High School from 1962 until his retirement in 1986. During his teaching career, he earned another master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Buffalo. Stan was a member of the Park Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir. He served on several boards at the church and acted as its financial secretary for many years. He was one of the founding members of the W.C.T.A. (now Reliant Community) Credit Union. An active member of Newark Retired Teachers Association, he had served as its president. He was a faithful and long-time Red Cross blood donor. In his retirement, he organized the local Red Cross blood drives. Stan also helped raise funds for the United Way of Wayne County. He also served as an election inspector for the Village of Newark and Town of Arcadia. Stan was a top fund raiser for the Newark CROP Walk for several years, and volunteered with the lunch program at the Emmanuel Methodist Church. An avid bicyclist, he used some of his riding time raising funds for Habitat for Humanity. After his bike riding days were over, Stan, being the environmentalist that he was, would walk the roads picking up litter as he went. In 2006, the Newark Rotary awarded Stan with a Paul Harris Fellowship for his many years of volunteer service to the community.
Stan is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley, four children Kenneth (Tina) May of Abingdon, MD, Sara May of Weedsport, Elizabeth May of Rochester, and Thomas May of Geneva; three grandchildren Erin (Michael) Crabtree, Ryan Enos and Murphy Enos; a brother Carl (Carol Ann) May of Honeoye; a sister Jane Fisher of Canandaigua; several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and an infant brother Dean.
