Thomas G. Velte
Newark—Thomas G. Velte, 76, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on Tuesday (December 15, 2015) at Rochester General Hospital.
Friends may call from 1 to 2:30 P.M. on Saturday (January 16, 2016) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark where a funeral service will follow at the funeral home. A Celebration of Tom's Life will continue immediately following at the Newark Elks Lodge, South Main Street, New York.
Memorials, in his name, may be made to either St. Michael's Martha Ministry, 401 South Main Street, Newark, New York 14513 or the Newark Elk Lodge #1249, 233 South Main Street, Newark, New York 14513.
Tom was born on August 15, 1939 in Newark, the son of the late George and Agnes Vale Velte. He graduated from Newark High School with the Class of 1957. In 1953, while still in high school, Tom started an apprenticeship at the Francis Mason's Barber Shop in Newark. In 1962, he continued his trade with the Al's Barber Shop in Geneva. After 25 years, as barber, Tom changed careers and for the next 25 years was a dedicated servant to the Citizens & Police of Ontario and Monroe Counties. He was a dispatcher for the Ontario Sheriff Department, Town of Brighton Police Department and finished his career with the City of Rochester 911 Center, retiring in July 2001. His hobbies were watching sports on TV and collecting baseball cards. Tom's favorite teams were the Washington Redskins, Duke Basketball and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Roberto Clemente was his idol and on several occasions traveled to Pittsburgh to watch him play. He was a member of the Newark Elk's and had served on the Board Trustees.
He is survived by his wife Angela “Dolly”; sons James (Nancy) and Matthew (Tricia), Peggy DePauw Donahue; 10 grandchildren: Jessica, Mallory, Miranda, Lexi and Anthony Velte, Michael and Ryan McConnon,, Jason and Paul Conrad, Rick Barry; 11 great-grandchildren; Blake and Brynne Jackson, Brendyn Fuchs, Carter and Olivia McConnon, Oliver Notebart, Riley, Darin, Marley, Ella and Elliott Conrad; several nieces and nephews. Tom was predeceased by his son Christopher, his brothers Gerald and Robert; sister-in-laws Teresa Velte and Linda Ursano Servello.
