Newark—Thomas J. Sheehan, 97, died Wednesday (July 5, 2017) at the Pathway Home in Tyre, New York.

There will be no calling hours or funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Pathway Home, 1529 State Route 414, Seneca Falls, New York 13148.

Tom was born August 21, 1919 in Yonkers, NY the son of John A. and Catherine V. (Brennan) Sheehan. He attended PS #17, Longfellow Jr. High and after graduating from Yonkers High School in 1938, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. He worked for Davey Tree Expert Co. of Kent, Ohio in LA, MS, AR, OH, Ct, and NY. He served in the US Army from 1942 -1945 and upon honorable discharge entered Oegon State College. In 1946, he transferred to Michigan State College where he earned a B.S. Degree in Agriculture and Applied Science. Tom married Glorie Conte in 1947. After college, he sold vacuum cleaners door-to-door. He then worked for the Dept. of Conservation as a parkway foreman with the Taconic State Park Commission at Clinton Corners, NY. Tom then accepted a position with the US Dept. of Agriculture & Markets in 1954 as a horticultural inspector., retiring in 1977.

He was an avid and accomplished golfer with many tournament victories including the 1952 Beekman Arms, the Bashford Cup and Sodus Bay Heights Country Club Championship in 1963, and the Wayne Hills Country Club Senior Scratch Champion in 1971. He served as Chairman of the Finger Lakes Golf Association for several years, rating courses in the Finger Lakes District for the USGA.

Tom was predeceased by his wife, Gloria in 2009. He is survived by his son Thomas M., daughters Kathleen Sheehan (Dave) Jones and Patricia Sheehan (Mike) Steingass of Newark and Nadine Sheehan of Tucson, AZ; grandson Zechariah (Roya) Lombardi and greatdaughter Leela Lombardi of Dallas, TX; granddaughter Alexandra Mitchell of Long Beach, CA; several nieces and nephews including Wayne Bricker of Newark, and many family friends.
