Newark"William J. Springett, 74, died Monday (September 24, 2007) at Rochester General Hospital.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Thursday (Sept. 27th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. Father Mark Brewer will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at Noon on Friday (Sept. 28, 2007) at St. Michael's Church, South Main Street, Newark. Burial will follow in East Newark Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Springett was born on June 18, 1933, in Rochester the son of Benjamin and Mary Feeley Springett. He graduated from Avon Central School and earned a Bachelor Degree in Education from the New York State University at Geneseo graduating in 1956. After graduation Bill, served as First Lieutenant in the US Marine Corp from 1956 to 1958. Moving to Newark in 1958, Bill taught 5th grade at the Lincoln School and in 1961 became the Principal of East Palmyra School, while continuing to teach 5th and 6th grades. By 1968, he had earned his Master Degree in School Administration at Geneseo and became the full time Principal of Lincoln School for three years. He then was Principal of the Kelley School, retiring in 1988 after 30 years with the Newark School District. Bill was Director of Adult Continuing Education for many years. He also taught continuing education for High School Equivalency as well as the migrant education summer school program. Bill had taken extra graduate courses at the University of Rochester, Syracuse and Plattsburg. He was the Wayne County Representative for CPSE (committee on preschool education) from 1993 until 2003 and a member of the School Administrators Assoc. of New York State.
Bill was a communicant of St. Michael's Church. He was a member of the Newark Lions Club, having served on its Board of Directors for several years and a member of the Bergen Swamp Society. Bill had a great love of the outdoors and conservation. The William J. Springett Conservation Award is given annually to a 5th grader in Kelley School who writes the winning essay on the environment and conservation. A great family man, his children now envision Mom and Dad dancing together again.
Bill is survived by his children Cristine (Michael) Kraham of Newark, Steven Scott of Webster, Wendy (Eugene) McGinnis of Rochester, Jeffrey (Mary Beth) of Newark, Gregory (Kathryn) of Newark, Peter (Amy Langenstein) of Victor, Colleen (Mark) Stevens of Rochester, and Chadwick (Kyra Savino) of Newark; 24 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, a brother Richard (Margie) of Sumter, SC, and a sister Florence (Thomas) Brah of Eagle River, WI, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Nancy in 1999 and five siblings.
