William R. Edwards
Newark—William R. Edwards, 91, died Sunday (May 1, 2011) at the Newark Manor Nursing Home.
Friends may call from 4-7 P.M. on Wednesday (May 4th) at the Paul L. Murphy & Sons Funeral Home, 127 East Miller Street, Newark. The Newark Elks will have a visitation service at 7 P.M. Funeral services will be at noon on Thursday (May 5th) at the funeral home with Rev. Brian Maag officiating. Burial will be in Newark Cemetery with full military honors.
Memorials, in his name, may be made to one's favorite charity.
Mr. Edwards was born July 20, 1919 in Fayette, the son of the late Charles and Lola Hocraft Edwards. He was an independent auto appraiser for many years, retiring in 1986. Bill served in the US Army during World War II, in the Pacific Theater. He participated with the 129th Field Artillery Battalion in the liberation of the Philippines at the Battle of Luzon. He was a Past Exalter Ruler of the Newark Elks Lodge, a member of the August Mauer Post American Legion, the Arcadia Memorial Post V.F.W. and the New York Central Hose Company #5 of the Newark Fire Department. Bill had been a member of the Fairville Presbyterian Church and was a Senior Companion with A.R.C.
He is survived by two sons Timothy of Newark and Michael of Tucson, AZ; a granddaughter Dawn Maltman of Palmyra; a great granddaughter Saige, several nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his wife Erma Jean in 2002, a daughter Pamela, a daughter-in-law Deborah; three his brothers Tom, Bob and Dick.
